A furnace is a device used for heating. This term on its own is generally used to describe household heating systems based on a central furnace, and sometimes as a synonym for kiln, a device used in the production of ceramics. The heat energy to fuel a furnace may be supplied directly by fuel combustion, by electricity such as the electric arc furnace, or through induction heating in induction furnaces.
The furnace transfers heat to the living space of the building through an intermediary distribution system. The distribution may be through hot water (or other fluid) or through steam. If it is so, then the furnace is more commonly termed a boiler. The furnace can provide hot water for bathing and washing dishes, rather than requiring a separate water heater, and this is one of the advantages of a boiler. Bur there is also a disadvantage to this type of application. This is when the boiler breaks down, not only do you not have heat, you don't have domestic hot water either.
However, there may be problems with your furnace. One of the problems may be the following. You may start your furnace and set it at the temperature you need. But it may kick off. It may run for some time and then shut off. Your furnace may be old, but cleaned and serviced often.
In this case, you need to ask a heating and air conditioning expert to come and look at your furnace. Nevertheless, do not be surprised if they recommend you get a new heating system. You one may be very old. Besides, it may be much more efficient and economical than an older one that may continue to break down.
Although heating and air conditioning companies usually charge for service calls whether you choose to have them repair the system or not. They almost always give free estimates on installing or replacing systems. You may decide to buy a new furnace. In this case you shouldn't automatically sign a contract with the first company that gives you an estimate. Don't do this even if you think you want to hire them to do the job. However, new equipment is too large of an investment to make a snap decision. But reputable firms will respect your desire to do your homework and get comparable bids.
Remember, that having a problem with your heating system, you have to ask a professional for help and do it as quickly as you can. But if you can mange with that by yourself, then do it without hesitating.
