| Water Heaters | How a Water Heater Works The majority of troubles with water heaters are connected with noisy sounds or with water being either too hot or not hot enough. Very often you may tackle the problem yourself, except those cases, when it concerns a water leak or tank replacement that may need professional service. Gas escape requires instant help from your utility company. Any time somebody turns on a hot water tap, heated water is pulled from the tank top and is superseded by cold water moving to the bottom through the dip line. After the temperature decreases, a thermostat activates the source of heat. A gas heater comprises a vent running up the center and out the top to flue poisonous gases. An electric heater requires no venting at all. In both heaters an anti-corrosion anode attracts corrosion that, in another case, would attack the walls of the tank.
Maintenance for Good, Safe Service To keep your heater in good order, it is recommended to follow these pieces of advice: • Open the drain bibb at the bottom each six months, allowing the water to run in a container till it looks clear (as a rule, it is needed almost 5 gallons). This will deter feculence buildup. • Every year test the temperature pressure; release the pressure accumulation by lifting or lowering its handle and exporting water from the leak-off pipe. In case water does not export, intercept water to the heater, open a hot water tap in the house and change the bibb.
Water Heater Safety Tip In case steam or boiling water comes out of the bibb or the hot water taps, switch off the heater immediately. If you hear a rattling sound, the heater must be overheated; if so, shut it off.
Water Temperature In case the temperature is a trouble on a gas heater, make sure the temperature control is on and is fixed properly (usually 160° or a little lower without a dishwasher). If you assume a damaged control, check it by opening for 3 minutes. In case the heater doesn’t switch on, fix the control to a lower temperature and check again. If it still doesn’t work properly, have it changed.
Draining and Flushing the Tank 1. Intercept the gas or electricity. 2. Shut off a cold water bibb. 3. Mount a hose to the drain bibb, to direct water into a sludge-hole or outdoors. 4. Open the drain bibb and one hot water tap at any place in the house to let the air in. 5. After all water has exported, turn the cold water bibb on and off till the water from the drain is clear. 6. shut off the drain bibb and the hot water tap, open the cold water bibb and turn on he power.
