Removing a Radiator

Removing a Radiator
If you need to remove a radiator for some purpose, pay attention to the following recommendations. It is not recommended to take away a radiator for decoration of the wall behind it. If you need to paint the wall, you should take a small paint roller with a long handle; cut slits in wallpaper to suit the radiator brackets and push the paper down behind the radiator.

Radiator Valves
There are two valves in a radiator located at the inlet and outlet of the radiator. The purpose of one of these valves is for every day control; the purpose of another valve is to reduce the maximum flow of water run through the radiator and to balance the system. Remove a radiator in the place where the lockshield incorporates a drain off point. Keep in mind that thermostatic valve may leak being fully closed, that is why it is advised to cap to completely seal them off to make the radiator is disconnected for some time.

If you have the necessity to remove the radiator, have such tools as:
1. A large adjustable spanner or spanners
2. A very thin and wide lockshield valve
3. The large Union nuts to connect the valves to the radiator
4. The drain off point
5. A radiator bleed key
6. A bowl, bucket and a short hose pipe.

Put a plastic dust sheet and/or newspapers on the floor under the radiator for better protection in the case of water spillage.

Isolating the Radiator
1. Before the procedure you should turn by hand the main control valve on the radiator clockwise to close it.
2. Then turn the lockshield valve with a tool clockwise. Keep in mind that the lockshield is usually covered by a cover that should be pulled off vertically. Attentively count and keep in mind the quantity of turns necessary to close the lockshield valve, because it is necessary to determine the balance of the system required for the opening of the radiator done at the same position.

Draining the Radiator
In the case you observe that the lockshield has a drain off point:
1. Connect a hose pipe to the drain off point and run the hose to the outside of the premises. Keep in mind the position of the hose should be below the level of the radiator. You may a bowl under the drain off point.

2. The next thing that should be done is to open the drain off point using a suitable spanner and open the bleed valve at the top of the radiator.

3. Then allow the radiator to drain. While using a bowl to collect the water, is recommended to empty it several times as soon as it fills up. Switch off the drain valve when the necessity to empty it arises, you may empty it into a bucket.
