How to Unclog a Drain

Do not be afraid, unclogging a drain is not such a difficult task. The main thing is being informed and having the right tools. First choose the liquid drain products that can be used with your home plumbing system and try them. Remember that it is not recommended to use some drain cleaners with PVC pipe. This information must be given on the label. Never unscrew a trap with chemicals present and never mix different types of chemicals. Many of them are incompatible with each other.

How to remove a trap
1. Take a basin or bucket and place it near you to catch water from the trap. If you used chemicals before, use a chemical resistant bucket, wear chemical resistant gloves and shield eyes while removing the trap.
2. Loosen the two end nuts of the couplings. Some of them can be loosened by hand, for other you may need a pipe wrench. When the trap will come free, the lost item can be found, or plug removed.
3. Check the washers for any damage when putting the trap back on. If it is damaged, it’s better to replace the damaged washers now, since it may save you a leak later on.

How to Unclog Hard to Negotiate Drains
Materials: 1/8" diameter stainless steel cable. Twisted strands, not braided.
Tools: Needle Nose Pliers
1. When the drain has sharp turns that are too tight for a plumbers snake (i.e., some bathtub drains), simply bend several individual wires (not strands) out in different directions from the center of the cable so that when rotated, the strands will snag hair in clogged drain.
2. Fish cable as you would a plumbers snake, twisting as you push gently to advance into and around elbows, etc.
3. When you feel the clog, just twist the cable until you feel some resistance and withdraw slowly to extract hair.
4. Repeat until the big wad comes out, maybe two or three times.
