 A lot of areas contain water impurities either form natural or artificial sources. These impurities may arouse different health problems, spoil equipment or plumbing or make the water unwanted because of taste, smell, appearance or staining. Those water impurities that arouse problems with health should be eliminated at once; the other ones may be disposed of if they are inconvenient. Prior to starting any treatment, have your water inspected for special impurities and level of pollution. Symptoms: water may or may not have taste or smell.
Reasons: pollution because of surface runoff comprising fertilizer, pesticides or dung; unprotected plumbing cross joints or sewage infiltration.
Treatment: disinfect water supply with the chlorine solution and set up an automatic chlorinator if needed. Mount check bibbs or other shield at cross joints and take care of air openings between taps and any potential source of pollution.
Symptoms: soap doesn’t lather well. Greasy, dirty rings in bathtubs and sinks. Milky layer or spots on dishes washed up in automatic dishwasher; husk accumulation in water heater and lines.
Reasons: hard water because of calcium and magnesium compounds getting from rocks and minerals in the ground.
Treatment: mount a water softener bypassing exterior water pipes. Otherwise, soften water in washer, bathtub or basins a packaged water conditioner. Specific husk filters may be attached to the cold water supply pipes to appliances. Softeners add sodium to water and may facilitate corrosivity, so you should better bypass potable water pipes.
Symptoms: reddish-brown marks in toilets, sinks, bathtubs, dishwashers and dishes. Water tastes metallic; brown residue in standing water.
Reasons: dissolved iron in the water, which is oxidized by air to create iron oxide that is unsolvable.
Treatment: after defining kind and extent of iron problem, choose proper iron removal equipment, like chlorinator and sand filter, high capacity water softener or manganese greensand filter. Selection of treatment for iron troubles may be complex, depending on the level of iron in the water and the existence of other contamination.
